CONFERENCE AGENDA

September 26, 2012 PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP
1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Beyond the Software: How to Navigate the Organizational Change Necessary to Fully Leverage BIM Technology

A Step-by-Step Change Management Approach to Organizational BIM Adoption

Josh Oakley and Randy Walton
ANGL Consulting (Atlanta)

Successful BIM adoption is not about software, it's about organizational change – and wrenching, disruptive change at that. According to change guru John Kotter, 70% of major change initiatives either don't get started or fail. This is evidenced in the industry's shift to BIM technology.

In addition to purchasing software and attending training, the key to sustainable and profitable BIM adoption lies in your organization's ability to create and execute a structured Change Management plan.

Process change begins with a process! In this session, participants will work through a structured Change Management model in support of AECO firms adopting BIM. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Specific strategies for reducing adoption and acceptance risk
  • How to take an organizational diagnostic
  • How to identify significant risk areas
  • Scripting the critical moves
  • Capabilities development for all major departments/functions
  • How to create change roadmaps
  • The importance of capabilities change workshops
  • How to develop a cost model for change activity
  • How to communicate the change
  • Specific strategies for facing the J-Curve

Josh Oakley has spent the past ten years as a plumber, a builder, and an architect. Before founding ANGL, Josh spent 4 years leading BIM implementation at The Beck Group in Atlanta, an internationally recognized Architecture and Construction firm. Josh worked with multi-discipline teams to design processes for information exchange during design, pre-construction, and construction. He is an industry expert in BIM technology and the workflows and processes necessary for its successful application.

Randy Walton is a highly sought after speaker and leadership expert who has been challenging the norms of business thought for over 20 years. Randy is a pioneer in developing compelling and profitable market strategies through the use of a unique, core value assessment and ideation process. He has extensive experience in corporate strategic planning, operations management, marketing, technology operations, business consulting, and organizational leadership. Randy mentors and advises senior leaders and executive teams throughout North America and Western Europe.

Integrated Project Delivery: The Endpoint of Collaborative BIM?

Howard W. Ashcraft, Jr., FACCL, Hon. AIACC
Partner
Hanson Bridgett LLP (San Francisco)

Intense digital collaboration between designers, contractors and owners is a radical change in practice. Teams in the United States, and now in Canada, are finding that full multi-party agreements enhance digital collaboration and overcome many of the legal issues arising from early collaboration in traditional projects. IPD also offers the potential for more efficient and sustainable projects. The speaker, who is working on IPD projects on both sides of the border, will discuss the essential elements and structures of IPD and how they relate to collaboration through digital models and their relation to traditional tendering.

Shortening Design Time: How Collaborative Use of a Referenced Model Workflow Worked

Andrea Hektor
Structural Engineer
KPFF Consulting Engineers (Portland)

Structural analysis of the Calgary National Music Centre utilized a reference model workflow, decreasing design time, increasing efficiency, and allowing for more architectural creativity due to rapid response of the design team to architectural changes. This CASE STUDYprovides insight into how to practically use a reference model workflow and items to be considered for potential projects.

  • Project analysis – does a referenced model workflow make sense?
  • Starting the process early – client communication and selection of appropriate software
  • Was this example a reference model workflow that went full circle?
  • How do we get to a point where design model-swapping occurs across multiple disciplines?
  • Other examples of reference model workflows
