The credit market freeze and global economic downturn have had a significant impact on the investing and fundraising environments in which private equity funds operate. This panel will discuss the following topics arising from this market turmoil from the perspective of the institutional investors that invest in these funds:

  • What investment strategies and themes are of interest to LPs today?
    • Buyouts – What are the expectations for the 2006-2008 vintage years? Thoughts for the future? Will mega-funds continue to be as successful as in the past?
    • Secondaries – There is a lot of discussion and interest, but are transactions getting done?
    • Emerging markets – Are they overheated?
  • What are LPs doing differently in the current environment? Has their approach to due diligence/monitoring changed?
  • Private equity funds currently have access to a significant amount of dry powder – is that a good thing or an indication that funds are too large?
  • Fund terms and conditions – Has the balance of negotiating power shifted to the LPs? If so, are they taking advantage of it? Which terms and conditions are LPs focusing on?
  • GP/LP relationship – What types of communications do LPs want/expect to have with their GPs? Does fund governance need to change?
  • FAS 157 – What are LPs looking for from GPs in terms of reporting in the wake of FAS 157?
