Mortenson Construction has been a pioneer in the use of Virtual Design and Construction for over a decade and has focused on measured results of integrated delivery. Recently, Mortenson had the unique opportunity to build a major laboratory project for the University of Colorado using BIM and Integrated Delivery after a similar building had been completed by another team using less integrated delivery methods. Derek Cunz will lead a presentation describing the differences between these projects, the use of BIM, and the measured benefits. The presentation will also include insight into other advanced uses of VDC to improve project outcomes and an overview of further trends in integrated delivery.

Dan will discuss how Turner sets the stage for a progression of models and encourages participation from designers and subcontractors. With a clear distinction between “Contractual IPD” and “Collaborative IPD”, Turner Construction has chosen to focus more on the collaboration version. Dan will also share how they have made great strides is in taking BIM to the field. Turner’s mantra is to say there is no such thing as a ‘Field Condition’; and Dan will share how they figure it out in the model by establishing a model scope that identifies both the progression of models and level-of-detail needed from stage to stage.

How to Avoid Disputes: Using BIM to Identify Potential Problems for Early Resolution

No BIM conference is complete without an understanding of recent legal developments in the industry. This presentation will focus on using BIM to identify potential legal disputes and solve them efficiently. You will learn the causes of the most common complaints and how they have been solved. It will include a commentary on what has been happening with the ConsensusDOCS BIM Addendum (and the AIA BIM Addendum) in the last couple of years in the U.S., namely what issues have come up etc.


Our speaker was Chair of the AGC’s BIMForum’s Legal Subforum and led a national USA effort to create the ConsensusDOCS BIM Addendum, the first contract form in the world specifically applicable to projects using Building Information Modeling. He also served as the vice-chair of the AGC’s Contract Documents Committee, a leader in the promulgation of the ConsensusDOCS family of documents.

UHN’s new $110M Krembil Discovery Centre, currently in construction, is being delivered via an ITA (Integrated Team Agreement) between architects, engineers, general contractor and the Owner. While this model has been used on other significant projects in the past, the KDC delivery is enhanced by the addition of BIM Technology to the process. BIM offers the potential to enhance the integration among design and construction professionals to assist in client visualization, design coordination, interference/clash detection and shop fabrication of M/E spooled components. Through this case study, presenters will discuss the potential this tool offers to clients consultants and constructors, but also some of the pitfalls of implementing a new technology on a large Science Research building typology.

Leveraging BIM as a Key Component of Your Firm’s Risk Management Strategy

Good risk management does more than reduce your Professional Liability insurance premiums. It also reduces overall costs within a design firm. The insurance industry has come to realize the significant value that BIM brings to improving the risk management profile of a design firm, and some insurance carriers are willing to provide significant credits for using BIM and financial incentives to adopt it. The reality is that no more than one-third of the total cost a claim against a design professional is covered by an insurance policy. Two-thirds of the cost is always borne by the designer and/or firm and these costs can be significant. Common costs not covered by an insurance policy are fines and penalties, lost billable time, lost opportunities, loss of reputation, etc. We will explore what role BIM can play in your firm’s risk management strategy, and talk about ways firms today are leveraging this to reduce not only their insurance costs but also the total cost of risk within their firms.

Defining Parameters of BIM Delivery via Pathfinder/Pilot Projects: Update on Owners’ Perspectives

At the BIM 2010 conference, attendees learned that many owners and government bodies have mandated the use of BIM from initial planning concepts up to bidding documents and finally to project close-out. One year later, this session will address what has been learned from pathfinder projects that were initiated to see the pros and cons of mandating BIM delivery.


This session will focus on pilot projects – metrics, successes, challenges, workable solutions, and include an analysis of projects that perhaps might not benefit as much from using BIM to facilitate the integrated project delivery process.
