Dear Colleague,
The decision to restructure Alberta's electricity market in the early 1990s was based on the belief that
competitive markets would increase customer choice and lower costs of supply. The last several years have
seen the realization of many of the benefits associated with restructuring. However, there are a number of
areas of the Alberta market that continues to generate discussion and debate among industry participants and
policy makers.
Is Alberta's electricity market still able to deliver the original vision or does it need to be revised in
a number of areas to deliver the vision? This conference will focus on four areas: key priorities and
initiatives of the market agencies; implications of the recent retail market review; the ability of the
wholesale market to continue to support the addition of new supply given the increased price volatility,
reduced liquidity and low natural gas prices; and, ongoing challenges of transmission interconnections both
internally and with neighboring jurisdictions.
This Insight Information summit brings together policy makers and industry participants
to encourage open and frank debate on these questions. The select roster of speakers includes a diverse range
of representatives from government, industry associations and industry who will share with you their expert
opinions and insights on the issues that need to be addressed if an electricity market that will meet the
needs of all participants is to evolve.
Important and thought-provoking questions will be addressed in this comprehensive two day event that is
designed to provide up-to-date insight into the forces that shape the Alberta and North American electricity
markets. As Chair, I encourage you to engage and challenge the speakers in group discussions, and to mix
socially with both speakers and other summit participants at networking lunches and breaks. Binders
containing the conference materials submitted by the speakers will become a valuable addition to each
participant's library. Please join us at this summit.
Yours truly,
