The Tsunami Comes Ashore: Workforce Issues About to Swamp – The Canadian Supply Chain

Kevin Maynard
Executive Director
Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council

In 2011 the Council launched an update on the initial 2005 study, to chart progress on challenges identified in 2005, and to scope out emerging trends and their impacts. Preliminary data is now in, and the prognosis is not good. This session will seek to provide:

  • An overview of the "stormy weather" just on the horizon, with specific information from our initial key findings
  • Comments on the top four issues currently faced by employers in the sector
  • Challenges in recruitment, lack of leadership skills in new recruits, lack of succession planning in organizations, and the impact of retirements

Participants will be equipped with links to the interim report, register to get copies of the final report and receive a USB key with tools and techniques to deal with the "hazards".

An Update on the Accelerator Project – Examining Further Potential to Expand Asia Pacific Gateway Initiative

Brian Fleming
Associate Professor
Bissett School of Business, Mount Royal University

Linda Lucas
Chair
Calgary Logistics Council

The Accelerator Project LMI research has identified 10 key occupations that support both the Gateway and the Corridor. This research indicates the overwhelming number of workers that just these 10 occupations currently and will require in BC and in Alberta over the next 10 years. Themes from stakeholder interviews provide us some insights into ways to address some of these issues:

  • Where will these supply chain workers come from?
  • How do we ensure that they have the right skills and knowledge required?
  • Do we have the collective will and capacity to work together at all levels to address and overcome these current and future labour challenges?
  • Are we prepared to accept the inevitable outcome of a lack of a coherent vision, fragmented actions, and an aligned strategy for the supply chain sector?
  • Will your organization be part of the problem or part of the solution?
